The Five Herods in the Bible.

We watch the Netflix Movie “Mary”. The same Herod when Mary was born and the same Herod who ordered the killing of the newborns in Bethlehem. However, there are are actually six Herods mentioned in the Bible,

Herod the Great. Also known as Herod I, he was the king of Judea who ordered the massacre of the infants in Bethlehem in an attempt to kill the baby Jesus.  The same Herod at the time Mary was born.

Herod Archelaus: Another son of Herod the Great, he was the ethnarch of Judea, Samaria, and Idumea after his father’s death.

But when he heard that Archelaus, Herod’s son, had succeeded him as ruler over all of the territory of Judah, he (Joseph) was afraid to go back. Then he had another dream from God, warning him to avoid that region and instructing him instead to go to the province of Galilee. – Matthew 2:22

Herod Antipas: The son of Herod the Great, he was the tetrarch of Galilee and Perea. He was the one who beheaded John the Baptist and who questioned Jesus during his trial.

But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!” – Mark 6:16

Herod Agrippa I: The grandson of Herod the Great, he was the king of Judea for a short time. He persecuted the early Christians and had the apostle James killed and put Peter to prison.

About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. – Acts 12:21

Herod Agrippa II: The son of Herod Agrippa I, he was the king of Chalcis and later the client king of parts of Judea and Galilee. He questioned the apostle Paul during his trial in Caesarea.

“King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews, ‘ – Acts 26:2

Philip the Tetrarch: Philip II, One of the sons of Herod the Great, he was the tetrarch of Iturea and Trachonitis. He is mentioned in the Bible but not given the name “Herod.”

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. – Luke 3:1-2
